The 69th Perceptual Frontier Seminar: Multisensory Cognition

Date and time: Monday, 18 December 2024, 16:00-17:30
Venue: 601 on the 6th floor of Build. 3 on the Ohashi campus <http://www.design.kyushu-u.ac.jp/kyushu-u/english/access>
Language: English
Organizer: Gerard B. Remijn (Kyushu Univ./ReCAPS)

Program

Talk 1: 16:00 - 16:40 (30 mins + 10 mins Q&A)

Effect of task difficulty on modality-shift cost

Natalia Postnova (Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki), Nelson Totah (Helsinki Institute of Life Science HiLIFE, University of Helsinki) , Benjamin Ultan Cowley (Cognitive Science, Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki, Faculty of Educational Sciences, University of Helsinki)

This study examines how the difficulty of a task in one sensory modality impacts perceptual learning in another modality in human participants, focusing on the concept of shift cost. Results indicate that, similar to findings in animal studies, humans experience a higher shift cost following a more demanding task, though they demonstrate stronger compensatory mechanisms. Additionally, musical training appears to significantly mitigate the effects of modality shifts, suggesting enhanced flexibility in attention across sensory domains.

Talk 2: 16:40 - 17:20 (30 mins + 10 mins Q&A)

Things overlooked on time-shrinking

Yoshitaka Nakajima (Sound Co. Ltd., Kyushu University)

Time-shrinking is an illusion of time perception. In a typical condition, two adjacent inter-onset time intervals of 45 and 120 ms, in this order, marked by three successive click sounds are presented. The second time interval is underestimated by around 40-50 ms. Since this illusion takes place robustly in simple contexts, it helps us to investigate the mechanisms of time and rhythm perception. I would like to indicate a few points that appear, but can be overlooked, in past related reports.

Note 1: Presentation times are liable to change.
Note 2: Since this is a special occasion where my former doctoral student (Natalia Postnova) and my former supervisor (Yoshitaka Nakajima) will present their work, we will open a bottle of wine at room 805, Bld. 3 (Gerard's office) after the PFS. You are welcome to join!
